Why Do Healing Crises (Jarisch-Herxheimer / Recovery Responses) Occur?

First, when you experience stress, blood circulation deteriorates. Circulation weakens across various organs and tissues, leading to the formation of blood clots or "stagnant blood" (eohyeol / dead blood). Foreign substances also accumulate inside the blood vessels.

Second, the functions of the stomach, small intestine, and large intestine decline, preventing toxins from being properly excreted. Consequently, the circulation of healthy blood suffers, triggering circulatory disorders in individual organs. Blood clots, stagnant blood, and intravascular impurities form as a result.

Third, a person may be born with genetically weak organs or a weak constitution. In these cases as well, poor blood circulation can cause stagnant blood and blood clots to develop.

Fourth, toxins accumulate in the body due to the side effects of medications, harming overall health.

Fifth, throughout life, various accidents, contusions, or injuries can give rise to stagnant blood and blood clots. As these impurities repeatedly hinder circulation, chronic illnesses develop.

A healing crisis is a natural process that occurs as the body removes the stagnant blood, blood clots, and toxins that cause these chronic illnesses. It is much like cleaning a house where trash has piled up—dust rises and foul odors released, but that process is necessary to make the house clean. Once toxins, stagnant blood, and dead blood are removed, blood circulation improves. Ultimately, you break free from chronic illness and enjoy a healthy life.

How Do Different Organs and Body Systems Show Healing Crises?

1. Stomach

At first, taking the product makes your stomach feel comfortable and aids digestion. After a certain point, however, you may feel like digestion has slowed down, experience bloating, find your meal portions decreasing, or lose your appetite. This is a common healing crisis that occurs as blood circulation improves in the stomach. During this time, proper use of remedies like Witong-hwan and Witeunteun, along with eating soft foods, will resolve most of these symptoms.

If there is coldness (cold qi) stored in the stomach, it may exit through the back, making your back feel very uncomfortable. Using Witong-hwan especially well here will help release that coldness from the back and bring relief. If your stomach is severely impaired, this process may occur several times. However, if you manage it properly according to the guidelines provided, your stomach will recover its health.

2. Small Intestine

The small intestine generally does not show an obvious healing crisis. As small intestine function improves, you will likely feel energized, vibrant, and more active.

3. Large Intestine

Initially, you may pass a lot of gas, or the gas may smell particularly foul. Stagnant stool (sukbyeon) may also be discharged. You might feel the urge to go to the bathroom several times a day and pass loose stools (though not quite diarrhea). After a few days, your bowel movements will normalize, leaving the intestines cleared of built-up waste.

During the removal of stagnant stool, you may experience a mild headache or body aches similar to the flu. These symptoms will completely disappear once the waste is cleared. As the large intestine's peristaltic motion improves, it actively expels toxins. Occasionally, as intestinal toxins are being released, some may not be fully eliminated at once and temporarily re-enter the system. When this happens, your energy levels may drop, your abdomen may feel full, and passing gas or stool might temporarily become difficult. After some time, gas and bowel movements will resume naturally, and your body will feel comfortable again. This phenomenon can repeat multiple times if your intestinal health was significantly compromised, but once this phase passes, you will enjoy a healthy gut.

4. Kidneys

You may experience frequent urination, and your urine may have a strong odor or look cloudy. Swelling may temporarily occur in parts of your body. Over time, the swelling will subside and urination will feel smooth and complete. If you suffer from lower back discomfort, your back may temporarily feel stiffer. As kidney function recovers, your lower back will feel comfortable again.

5. Pelvis / Hip Area

Initially, the pelvic region will feel looser and more comfortable, raising your spirits. After a while, as blood circulation opens up in the area, you may briefly re-experience past pain or discomfort. This is the process of stagnant blood breaking down; given a little time, the pelvic area will gradually become healthier.

6. Lower Body Circulation

At first, your legs and lower body will feel light, energized, and refreshed in a short amount of time. However, if your circulatory impairment was severe, past discomforts may resurface after a certain point. When this happens, rest your body and wait it out. As circulation clears, vitality will return to your lower body. If deep injuries left heavy blood clots, the process of resolving them will naturally take longer.

7. Heart

Initially, the heart feels calm and relieved. However, if your cardiac function was significantly weakened, you may temporarily feel anxious, restless, or experience chest tightness again. Waiting calmly through this phase will allow symptoms to improve. These symptoms may recur several times if the heart was in poor condition, but remaining patient and keeping a peaceful mindset will help your heart gradually regain its health. Mild feelings of anxiety or tightness may occasionally flare up until complete recovery is achieved.

8. Eyes

Your eyes may feel drier, and eye discharge (sleep) may increase. You might experience frequent tearing or sticky substances draining from the eyes, or your vision may temporarily become blurry as if fogged over. All of these occur as blood circulates through the optic nerves and clears out stagnant blood. Over time, these symptoms will dissipate, restoring healthy eyes, while dry eye conditions and intraocular pressure equalize.

9. Head / Brain

As cerebral blood circulation improves, you may feel extremely sleepy or experience persistent fatigue even after sleeping. This is a natural reaction as chronic fatigue releases from the body. If you previously suffered from migraines or localized head pain, those areas may feel a sharper, throbbing, or pricking sensation as circulatory blockages open up. An itchy scalp indicates that toxins are being discharged from the head—scratching is fine as the toxins work their way out. Although the head manifests discomfort in various external ways, these symptoms will vanish one by one. You will feel improved facial circulation, and your memory, focus, and concentration will bounce back. Stiffness in the neck and shoulders will also ease up noticeably.

10. Liver

As the body's primary detoxification organ, the liver neutralizes toxins. As the blood cleanses, accumulated toxins exit the body. This can cause itching, skin hives, or distinct body odors as toxins are released. With time, as the toxins clear out, your skin will settle down and your body will feel at ease. Furthermore, as large intestine function improves, liver function will recover alongside it.

11. Lungs

As systemic circulation improves, coughing and phlegm may occur. A key characteristic is coughing up phlegm without a fever (unlike a common cold). This is a natural healing response to expel foreign substances from the lungs. Once these are cleared, oxygen intake and carbon dioxide discharge become much smoother, filling the body with vital energy. You may feel chest pain while coughing, but both sides of your chest will feel clear and light after a short while. Pus accumulated from sinusitis or rhinitis may also drain through nasal passages and the throat. Once these healing responses pass, pulmonary blood circulation will be fully restored.

12. Nodules, Lumps, or Tumors in the Body

As circulation improves and immune cells begin attacking tumors or nodules, you may feel pricking or throbbing sensations in those areas, along with temporary low-grade fevers. Over time, nourished by healthy blood, these abnormal growths can soften or weaken in density, eventually dissolving away as smooth circulation continues.

Healing crises can manifest in many different ways depending on the specific organ, body part, severity of the condition, or type of illness. If you have any further questions about specific conditions, please feel free to ask anytime, and we will be happy to explain in detail.
